Completion of Daruma Doll with Two Painted Eyes to Celebrate First Batch of Graduates

On Friday, July 30, 2021, an online ceremony was held to celebrate the graduation of the first batch of students who have completed the International Joint Master’s Degree Program in Food Science and Technology between Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) and Gifu University (GU). On February 5, 2018, before the Program launched, IITG and GU Program coordinators followed the Japanese tradition with a Daruma doll* and painted in one eye of the two dolls together, praying for the students’ successful completion of the program. GU students completed the program on March 25, 2021, IITG students on July 16, 2021 respectively. In the ceremony, both Program coordinators completed Daruma dolls by painting in the remaining eyes as a token of great success and achievement. They shared the joy of fulfilling goals and renewed their commitments to fostering human resources who can promote internationalization, give back to the community, and aim for the glocalization of regional communities.

*About a Daruma doll
Daruma is a traditional Japanese doll that symbolizes perseverance and luck. One of the most noticeable features is its blank glance. Legend has it that people in the past who wanted the god residing in the doll to help them achieve their goals would vow that they would give Daruma its eyesight if the god helped them succeed in their endeavors.

Daruma: Bodhidharma, who was an Indian Buddhist from South India and disseminated Buddhism in China from the 5th to the 6th centuries.
