[Inter-University Exchange Project] Co-hosting of "Indo-Japan Bilateral Symposium 2023 on Technologies for Bio Economic Development of NER"

Gifu University (GU) and the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) co-hosted the "Indo-Japan Bilateral Symposium 2023 on Technologies for Bio Economic Development of NER (IJBS 2023)" at IITG, India on Friday, March 3, 2023. The symposium was held as part of the "FY2022 Inter-University Exchange Project Gifu University: Support for Creation of Inter-University Exchanges in the Indo-Pacific Region" by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. This project has been implemented by GU and IITG, one of GU's Joint Degree Programs' (JDP) overseas partner universities.

At "IJBS 2023," representatives from industries and academia in Japan and India met in-person to share information necessary for the future growth of the bio-economy in the north eastern region (NER) of India, and the acceleration of strong collaboration between the two countries.

Opening remarks by Prof. Parameswar K. Iyer, Officiating Director of IITG was followed by greetings from the officials from the Japanese Embassy to India, the Federation of Industry & Commerce of NER, the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd. and Numaligarh Refinery Limited.

GU professors specializing in disaster management, sustainable technology and food supply chain attended the symposium and made a presentation on their respective research themes. Programs to foster highly skilled professionals for regional revitalization in the aforementioned three fields which are jointly implemented by GU and IITG were also introduced to the audience. Lastly, presentations on biomass businesses were made by officials from the private sector in both countries. The discussions among presenters that followed showcased people's high expectations for further development of the bio-economy in NER, India.

GU students attending the "Spring School 2022 (short-term outbound program at IITG)" were also invited to attend the symposium and had a chance to have a new insight into the latest information in the fields of disaster management, sustainable technology and food supply chain.

The "Gifu Joint Degree Symposium" started in 2019, hosted by Gifu University Organization for Promotion of Glocalization (GU-GLOCAL), and since 2020, it has been co-hosted with Tokai National Higher Education and Research System (THERS) after GU and Nagoya University (Aichi Prefecture) merged into one academic entity in April 2020. The "IJBS 2023" is the first symposium co-hosted by GU and IITG and held in India. We continue to open symposiums with IITG with the "Glocal JDP Platform" as a strong facilitator in order to contribute to the cultivation of highly skilled personnel and the prosperity of local and international communities through a close partnership among industry, government, academia and banking institutions between Gifu, the extensive central Tokai area, and NER in India.
