Three first-year master's students affiliated with Gifu University (GU), enrolled in the International Joint Degree Program in Food Science and Technology between Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG, India) and GU, successfully completed their curriculum in India in December 2023.

This international joint master's degree program is one of the four Joint Degree Programs established by GU, IITG, and the National University of Malaysia (UKM, Malaysia) in 2019.

The three students, belonging to the fifth cohort of this program, commenced their study abroad experience on July 24, 2023, spending approximately four months at IITG. During this period, they attended specialized courses offered by IITG, together with their Indian counterparts. These courses covered advanced technologies in food processing and rural development technology. Additionally, under the guidance of IITG joint supervisors, the students engaged in their respective research activities. From December onwards, the students undertook internships at food manufacturing companies in India. On December 20, a farewell event was kindly organized by the Indian academic coordinator of the program, and the students successfully marked the completion of their curriculum in India. Of the three, two students have already returned to Japan, while one student will continue her stay in India until March of the following year, pursuing further research activities.

For this study abroad program in India, the students received support from the Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Study in Japan under Agreement) 2023 of the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). The students will continue to conduct research activities under the guidance of joint supervising faculty from both Japan and India. If everything proceeds smoothly, they are expected to obtain an international joint degree in March 2025.
