Gifu University JDP student (master's degree) completed his study at IITG, India

Mr. UMEHARA Akira, first year student studying "International Joint Department of Food Science and Technology between Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati and Gifu University (master's degree)" of the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology, Gifu University, completed his study at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) on December, 2022.

The aforementioned master's degree program is one of four Joint Degree Programs (JDP, international master's and doctoral degree) which were launched jointly with IITG and the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in April 2019.

Mr. Umehara who is the forth batch of students of the program, arrived at IITG on July 25, 2022, and studied there for almost four months. He attended lectures on the latest food processing and food manufacturing technologies that are offered by IITG with his Indian classmates (FIG 1). He also engaged in his research activities under instructions of Dr. Omkar S. Deshmukh in the Department of Chemical Engineering, who is sharing a supervising role for Mr. Umehara with his supervisor at Gifu University.

From December last year, Mr. Umehara participated in an internship program that was offered to him by an enterprise specializing in hydroponic culture in India (FIG 2). At the end of December, he attended an online presentation session with the presence of officials from the enterprise and academic staff from both universities. He presented new findings and discoveries he experienced through his joining the internship, and shared his considerations from the perspective of his study subject, namely, agricultural food processing and engineering. His attendance at the online presentation marked successful completion of his study at IITG.

Mr. Umehara's study at IITG was supported by the Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Study in Japan under Agreement) 2022 of the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).

Mr. Umehara continues his research at Gifu University under a dual supervision by GU and IITG supervisors in order to earn his master’s degree in Mach 2024.
