Professor Lim Lee Wah (Faculty of Engineering) attended a webinar titled “University Leadership in Challenging Times – And the Way Forward” which was jointly hosted by the Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM, GU’s overseas partner university and its Joint Degree (JD) program counterpart) on Thursday, February 10, 2021.

Many participants were attending from universities or colleges around the world including Prof. Dr. Arif Satria, S.P., M.Si., Rector of IPB University (Indonesia, also GU’s overseas partner university), and discussed possible ways forward for internationalization of higher education with a strong focus on strategies to recruit global-minded individuals to their institutions. Active opinion exchange followed regarding how to secure quality of education and ideals to pursue by the members of academic communities.

Participants from Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, and Mexico, etc. introduced how classes are being operated at universities/colleges in their respective countries. It was learned that almost all classes are conducted online in those countries in order to prioritize the safety of their students. Professor Lim reported (via chat-function) Gifu University’s “hybrid” class approach, i.e., mixture between online and in-person classes offered to the students. This GU’s unique approach was well received by many participants.

In the post-pandemic world where people’s movements and in-person communications will remain restricted in one way or another, we continue striving to engage in a variety of academic activities and research initiatives in an effort to provide our students an opportunity to learn, and to enhance quality of education while closely monitoring any new developments made in academic communities around the globe.
