Professor Yoshihito Ueno attended “The 4th Japan-India YNU Seminar: Human Resource Development for Industry-Government-Academia Collaboration”

On Friday, March 12, 2021, Professor Yoshihito Ueno, Division Head, International Collaborative Education Promotion Division, GU-GLOCAL attended “The 4th Japan-India YNU Seminar: Human Resource Development for Industry-Government-Academia Collaboration” (Webinar, hosted by Yokohama National University (YNU)). The theme of the seminar was “Current Status of India-Japan Partnership and Challenges Ahead from the Perspectives of Inter-University and University-Business Collaboration in Japan and Abroad.”

The seminar was attended by invited guest speakers including Professor Ueno, all of whom are playing pivotal roles in promoting strong partnership between Japan and India. The speakers made presentations on behalf of the communities they represent (industries, governments and academia). The main focus of the seminar was to develop human resources in India who can contribute to strong growth in Japan, and can build a sustainable society in the future.

Professor Ueno made a presentation on Joint Degree Program (JDP) which was launched in April, 2019 with Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), and the National University of Malaysia (UKM). He spoke of the program’s major missions and goals, as well as unique episodes concerning the program launching, etc. He also highlighted the program’s special features in both outbound and inbound, which are being offered to GU students beyond the borders of faculties and schools. Professor Ueno concluded his speech by citing achievements jointly attained by researchers of GU and IITG, and wrapped it up with the university’s visions for JDP.

In the following Q&A session, participants exchanged their views on JDP such as what motivated them to launch the program instead of “Double Degree” programs, added values it is expected to generate, and objective criteria to evaluate the program’s progress or results in the days to come.

Participants learned a lot concerning the current situations in India and Japanese firms’ business strategies to overcome today’s enormous challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to innovative, pioneering joint programs implemented by other universities.

“The 4th Japan-India YNU Seminar: Human Resource Development for Industry-Government-Academia Collaboration” offered GU staff a valuable opportunity to reaffirm the directions to pursue in order to foster a stronger partnership with IITG for years to come.
