On Friday, December 20, 2024, His Excellency Mr. Sibi George, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India visited Gifu University.
The ambassador met with President YOSHIDA Kazuhiro, Executive Director KOYAMA Hiroyuki of the Gifu University Organization for Promotion of Glocalization (GU-GLOCAL), Specially Appointed Professor MIWA Shinichi (GU-GLOCAL), and Director NONOMURA Haruko of the Student Affairs Department.
They discussed further promoting international education and research activities, as well as expanding inbound and outbound programs for students and researchers between Gifu University and India.
After the meeting with the president, the ambassador attended an exchange meeting with 18 Indian students, faculty members, and alumni of Gifu University. During this meeting, the ambassador delivered a strong message to the students about the benefits of forming strong ties between Japan and India in the fields of businesses, academia and research. The students listened attentively to the ambassador's visions and expectations for the younger generation, who can serve as a bridge between the two countries in the future.
At Gifu University, 21 students have completed the Joint Degree Program (JDP) since its launch with the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) and the National University of Malaisia (UKM, Malaysia). Gifu University is the sole university in Japan that has implemented a JDP with an Indian university. Centered around the JDP, both Gifu University and IITG offer various educational and research opportunities for students and researchers, such as short-term study programs. A steady annual inflow of Indian students to our campus is a testament to our successful efforts in fostering friendly relations, industrial development, and research activities between Japan and India.
Gifu University plans to hold a JDP Symposium at IITG in March 2025, aiming to further strengthen collaboration between two universities and regions in Japan and India.
Through the ambassador's visit, we continue to seek to deepen our cooperation with Indian universities and research institutions, striving to reach a new phase of collaboration in the fields of education and research.
