The 19th Japanese Speech Competition by International Students Residing in Gifu Prefecture

The Gifu Regional Council for the Promotion of International Exchange (Gifu University is in charge of its administrative duties) hosted “The 19th Japanese Speech Competition by International Students Residing in Gifu Prefecture” at Gifu University Satellite Campus (Gifu City) on Monday, November 23, 2020.

Since 2001, the competition has been organized by the Council to raise international students' interests in Japanese as well as enhance their Japanese proficiencies. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was held with a limited audience this year.

After an opening speech by the President of Gifu University, Hisataka Moriwaki (Chairperson of the Council), four students (from two countries) from two institutions within Gifu Prefecture, gave a seven-minute speech each in Japanese, all of which demonstrated their sincere efforts to study Japanese.

Although the scale of the 19th competition was significantly reduced since many international students are still unable to come to Japan yet, active exchange between the students and the screening committee members resulted in motivating the students to further enhance their Japanese skills including using better expressions and developing a deeper understanding about Japanese culture, etc.
