Gifu University & Lithuania Panel Exhibition

A “PANEL EXHIBITION -Significant Milestones of Exchanges between Gifu University & Lithuania-”, sponsored by GU-GLOCAL, will be held from Thursday, December 3 to Friday, December 25, 2020 in the lobby of the library main entrance (2F).

Chiune Sugihara (1900 – 1986), a native of Gifu, served as a Japanese diplomat and vice-consul for the Japanese Empire in Kaunas, Lithuania during the Second World War.

His heroic act of issuing transit visas to some six thousand Jews feeling Nazi persecution helped save their lives. Since then, Gifu Prefecture and Lithuania continue enjoying long-standing, thriving ties, which have led to a successful conclusion of a partnership between Gifu University and two institutions of academic excellence in Lithuania; Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) in 2010, and Vytautus Magnus University (VMU) in 2012.

Dynamic, prospering academic and student exchanges between Gifu University and the two Lithuanian universities marked a significant milestone when Gifu University had the honor of welcoming the President of the Republic of Lithuania, H.E. Gitanas Nausėda at our campus in 2019. To commemorate his visit, Gifu University conferred the Honorary Doctorate Degree on President Gitanas Nausėda.

This panel exhibition presents an overview of the history of our partnership between GU and KTU / VMU highlighting the “2019 Special Commemorative Lecture” delivered by the President of Lithuania.
