On Thursday, June 12, 2025, Chubu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, Central Japan Economic Federation, and Gifu University co-hosted the collaboration event "Meet Up Chubu vol.64 CN (biomass and bamboo resource utilization) with GU-GLOCAL" at Nagoya Innovators Garage (4th floor of Nadya Park, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture) and online. The event targeted companies and researchers interested in joint research and the creation of new businesses, attracting a total of 257 participants - 53 in person and 204 online.
The event began with an introduction by Professor KOYAMA Hiroyuki, Executive Director of GU-GLOCAL, who presented the organization's past initiatives. He highlighted activities centered around regional consortiums, including collaborations with northeast India and practical examples of biomass utilization of bamboo resources. His talk expanded to global environmental issues, such as rising atmospheric CO₂ concentrations and their impact on plant growth, offering insights from the perspective of environmental science.
Following this, Professor EBIHARA Akio, Associate Director of GU-GLOCAL, outlined Gifu University's academic collaborations with India, prospects for joint degree programs (JDP), and the importance of consortiums that connect local communities, industries, and universities. He encouraged participation and membership to strengthen future activities of the consortiums.
The event was moderated by Dr. MIWA Shinichi, Specially Appointed Professor at GU-GLOCAL, who facilitated information exchange among speakers.
Several companies and research institutions presented diverse examples of utilizing plant-based resources, particularly bamboo. Aichi Kaiun Co., Ltd. reported on the current state of biomass fuel imports; Chuetsu Pulp & Paper Co., Ltd. introduced a technique for extracting cellulose nanofibers using only water without chemicals; and Marudai Ironworks Co., Ltd. showcased a room-temperature, single-step ultra-fine bamboo powder processing technology. These innovative efforts demonstrated a balance between environmental sustainability and economic viability.
Additional presentations included the development of composite plastic products using plant-derived materials, research on bamboo-based materials for the casting industry, and antibacterial and antioxidant products derived from bamboo extracts.
GU-GLOCAL will continue to promote glocal collaborations that connect regional resources with global challenges, aiming to create new value through partnerships with diverse stakeholders.
Note: This event also serves as part of Bamboo Resources Workshop launched FY2022.
