Gifu Joint Degree Symposium 2021

“Gifu Joint Degree (JD) Symposium 2021” opened on Thursday, December 9 and Friday, December 10, 2021. The symposium 2021 is the third international JD meeting and was held in the form of a mixture of on and offline meetings for the first time.

The first session, “Tokai National Higher Education and Research System (THERS) JDP Symposium was hosted by THERS, and both the second “Academic Session” and third “Industry-Government-Academia-Banking Institution Collaboration Session” were hosted by Gifu University Organization for Promotion of Glocalization (GU-GLOCAL).

After an opening speech by Dr. Seiichi Matsuo, THERS Chancellor, “THERS JDP Symposium” started. Under the theme of “Joint Degree Programs in New-Normal Era: Internationalization of Educational and Research & Regional Revitalization,” Ms. Orie Kishimoto, Leader, International Strategy Team, Higher Education Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) delivered her keynote speech titled, “Joint Degree Programs in New Normal Era.” In her speech, she spoke about the hardships and challenges that many international students are facing today in the prolonging effects from the pandemic, job-hunting support programs, advantages of joint degree programs and its future directions.

It was followed by a number of lectures to discuss comparisons between JDP and double degree programs of Gifu University, JDP implemented by Ritsumeikan University and Nagoya University, etc. Professor Yoshihiko Uematsu, Executive Director of GU-GLOCAL summed up the discussions by referring to the meaning and missions of newly launched Japan JD Program Council.

Next, with Professor Uematsu as moderator, Ms. Kishimoto, and representatives of Central Japan Economic Federation, Ritsumeikan University, Nagoya University and Gifu University exchanged opinions about human resource development that JDP is aiming for.

In closing, Dr. Hisataka Moriwaki, THERS Executive Trustee/Vice Chancellor made the following statement: “There is a growing expectation for international collaborative education including JDP and we will continue to share ideas and thoughts with our partners over collaborative education programs to contribute to a success and growth of Japan and the world. In this respect, the new Japan JD Program Council is expected to play a pivotal role in the days to come. I would like to ask everyone to engage in the missions as a responsible member of the Council.”

In the “Academic Session,” under the theme of “Sustainable Development of Regions: SDGs and beyond,” participants discussed regional growth concepts and “green technology” for protection of environment initiated by local industries and businesses.

In the “Industry-Government-Academic-Banking Institution Collaboration Session,” with “Regional Revitalization Driven by International Joint Degree Programs” in focus, invited panelists exchanged their views on regional revitalization through strong alliance among the central Tokai Region (Japan), North Eastern India and Malaysia (both of which are GU’s partner nations for JDP), as well as bamboo resources use for SDGs and reaching a carbon neutrality. Representatives from Japanese industries, financial communities, government organizations and academia actively engaged in discussions on collaborative business opportunities and attaining SDGs together.

In the Booth Exhibition set up in parallel with the Symposium, 17 local companies and organizations introduced their products and services to GU students. It also became a venue for local businesses to exchange their business strategies and operations.

A total of 479 people attended Gifu Joint Degree Symposium 2021 (177 for “THERS JDP Symposium,” 73 for “Academic Session,” 118 for “Industry-Government-Academia-Banking Institution Collaboration Session,” 111 for the Booth Exhibition).

Successful Gifu Joint Degree Symposium 2021 marked another significant milestone for continued implementation of joint degree programs by all stakeholders for years to come.
